I am a Managing Director at Qiming Venture Partners in Beijing. I am looking for a full-time MBA intern to work with me on my annual Consumer Internet roadmap for 8 weeks during the summer.

We are an early stage venture capital firm that focuses on China. We have approximately US$1 billion from 3 funds under management. Our LPs are mostly leading universities and endowments in the US. We have made over 70 investments, all of which are either headquartered in China or treat China as their primary market. We have 4 industry teams spanning internet/consumer services, healthcare, IT, and cleantech, covered by 9 deal-makers and just as many investment professionals. Background:
Every summer I work with a couple capable summer associates and analysts to systematically examine new developments in the Consumer Internet space in the US over the last 12 months, as well as to explore potential lessons and adaptations for the Chinese market. Such interns are based in Beijing, China, for roughly 8 weeks from late May/early June to end of July/early August.

Nature of this Beijing-based Summer Project:
At a high level, I am intrigued by the convergence of ecommerce, local commerce, online social networks, online gaming, mobile internet (over smartphones) and open platforms. I believe mobile devices will replace notebook PCs in 10 years, photos and videos are more powerful than text for GenY, and open platforms enable massive data analytics and UE to levels unimaginable before. I am also fascinated by sociological factors that help to favor one business model over another in addressing particular user needs, some of which are common across cultures and countries vs. others who are not.

- in Beijing: Xiaomi  Mobile (小米手机), VANCL (凡客诚品), Leho (爱乐活) which is affiliated with Baidu (百度), and Kaixin001 (开心网), which is affiliated with Tencent (腾讯);
- in Shanghai: 51Fanli (返利网) and eHi Car Rental (一嗨租车）in Shanghai,
- additionally, managers from SINA Microblogs (新浪微博) and another Qiming portfolio Dianping （大众点评网）also participate.

VANCL (凡客诚品) and Xiaomi Mobile (小米手机) are amongst top 5 e-commerce companies in China. Xiaomi is the hottest selling Android phone in China right now. At the risk of over-simplification, Baidu is China’s Google; Tencent is China’s Facebook + EA. eHi Car Rental is China’s Enterprise Car Rental + Boston Coach + Zipcar. Dianping （大众点评网）is China’s Yelp + Foursquare + Groupon. Sina Microblog (新浪微博) is China’s Twitter and more. Kaixin001 (开心网) is amongst China’s leading social game platforms.

Preferred Candidate Background:
Relevant work experience, and/or strong interest (as an active user), in online social networks like Facebook and Twitter, mobile internet (either iPhone or Android phones), FMCG, e-coupons, and/or e-recommendations are required. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading and/or writing) is a major plus and strongly preferred. Knowledge of (or interest in) either the Japanese or the Korean internet and mobile markets is a plus, but not required. No prior VCPE experience is required. We will work with non-Chinese national on visa entry and work authorization.

Tivli – A New Digital TV Experience

On Sunday 3/11 Digital Harvard is being hosted by the University at SXSW in Austin.  The event is bringing together students, alumni, and staff from across the University.  We’ll get together in February in Harvard Square to meet others who will be at the event, and headed to Austin in general.  This pre-SXSW meetup is open to anyone in the Harvard community who plans on going to Austin in March.

What: The presentation traces the evolutionary process of Apple’s marketing efforts from 1981 through 2010. It includes such noteworthy advertising campaigns as “Think Different,” and the “1984 Launch of the Macintosh.” Taught by Bill Cleary who worked at Apple as a senior marketing manager from 1981-85 In 1987 Cleary founded CKS Group, a revolutionary marketing firm that did all the advertising and marketing for Next Computer and Pixar——as well as serving Apple (marketing support) from 1987-2000. In addition, CKS Group was responsible for the launch of major web-based brands such as eBay, Amazon, Yahoo and Excite. Additionally, the CKS roster of clients included Disney, GM, MCI, Mitsubishi, Audi, United Airlines, Visa and Mazda.

Tisdale Fellowship

Technology and Policy Internship

The Eben Tisdale Fellowship, which includes a $5,000 grant, is a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students where the high-tech sector meets the government.  The program offers outstanding opportunities for students to learn about technology and public policy issues with hands-on experience in Washington, D.C.  Tisdale Fellowships are open to students from colleges and universities all over the country.

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which includes one $5,000 grant for one student each year, is part of the Tisdale Fellowship program.  Any undergraduate or graduate student, who is interested in diversity and ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues, may apply for this Fellowship.

The application for both of these Fellowships is the same, except that those applying for the Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship are required to submit an additional essay on diversity and ethics.

The Fellowship has two main elements:

(1) Internship:  Fellows participate a nine-week internship in the government relations office of a leading high technology company or association.  In the recent past, fellows have interned at such companies as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Philips Electronics and Monster Worldwide, as well as trade associations such as the Business Software Alliance or TechAmerica.

2)  Issues Seminar:  The issues seminar is a weekly lunch hosted by the different sponsoring companies and associations.  Expert speakers lead discussions of current public policy issues in Washington, and the methods the high technology industry uses for effective advocacy.

The Summer 2012 Fellowship runs from June 18^th – August 10^th, 2012. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy advocacy and senior management positions. The final deadline for all applications is February 15, 2012.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP
We’re looking for MBA candidates to help us out in the areas of online marketing, business development, and web/mobile analytics. Our ideal candidate is highly analytical, organized, and able to work independently. Personal interest in fashion and/or prior industry experience is a major plus.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The exact position we offer will depend on your skills and interests, but examples of potential projects include:

• Design and execute marketing campaigns on multiple platforms including Facebook, email, mobile
• Develop and execute content strategy across our social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr
• Build and manage an offline community of users through promotional events for Snapette such as trunk shows, cocktail parties, and photo contests
• Run analytics on user data and campaign results to identify areas for optimizing marketing spend and product design/features
